Telugu Varnamala – Vowels (acchulu)

Telugu alphabets are known as “Varnamala”. Varna means letters and mala means garland. So garland of Telugu letters/alphabets is Varnamala.

Telugu language alphabets are divided into three types. They are

  1. Vowels (acchulu)
  2. Consonants (hallulu) and
  3. Semi-consonants (ubhayaakshraalu)

Here is the Chart of Telugu alphabets/letters.

Not all the alphabets of Telugu varnamala are in use, for example here letters marked in yellow are not in regular use. Each letter have a system of expression of sound that is pronunciation. Observe the chart below. Ans practice the sounds.

  1. Acchulu – Vowels
a /a/ Sounds like ‘u’ as in sun
aa or A /ɑː/ ‘a’ as in start
i /ɪ/ ‘i’ as in ‘is’
I or ee /iː/ ‘ee’ as in ‘steel’
u /u/ ‘u’ as in ‘put’
U or oo /uː/ ‘u’ as in ‘juice’
R /ru/ ‘ru’ as in ‘rupee’
Ru /ruː/
/lu/
/luː/
e /e/ ‘e’ as in ‘pet’
E /eː/ ‘a’ as in ‘tape’
ai /ai/ ‘i’ as in ‘ice’
o /o/ ‘O’ as in ‘go’
O /oː/ ‘o’ as in ‘store’
ou

 

/au/ ‘ou’ in ‘stout’

Depending upon the transliterator, you can type either of the english letters to achieve desired telugu alphabet. For example to type ‘ఆ’ either aa or A or /ɑː/ will work.
