Chapter 3: Keep Calm and Jam On

3.2 Why music for EMC²?

You would already know that music and songs has been used in language learning for a very long time, from nursery rhymes in primary education to study of contemporary songs in foreign language learning. Music can also serve as a bridge between cognitive learning and social-emotional growth (Váradi). Integrating music into education can foster:

  • Empathy: Music evokes feelings and helps learners connect with diverse perspectives.
  • Mindfulness: The rhythmic and melodic aspects of music encourage presence and awareness.
  • Critical Inquiry: Analysing musical elements sharpens analytical thinking and interpretation skills.
  • Compassion: Music often carries stories of human experiences, fostering understanding and kindness.

By embedding music into lessons, educators can transform abstract concepts into sensory experiences. Whether through singing, listening, or creating, learners can explore academic topics with deeper emotional and intellectual engagement.
