3.2 Meaning of Social Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a psychological construct directly related to positive psychology. It focuses on developing skills such as emotional intelligence, empathy, resilience, and coping mechanisms. It helps individuals understand and manage emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. It involves the process of developing self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in an educational context refers to the process by which students, teachers, and others acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary to understand and manage emotions, set positive goals, exhibit empathy, foster positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. These skills significantly impact attendance, behaviour, and academic achievements. SEL promotes resilience, helping individuals, especially children, cope with adversity. It focuses on enhancing emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, and self-awareness, aiming to empower individuals to regulate emotions, build healthy relationships, and make informed choices. Recognizing emotional well-being as a crucial component, SEL aims for holistic development, encompassing skills vital for success in school, work, relationships, and life overall.
